What I Learned In Prison

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day to take it easy and look forward to the weekend. And, seeing as how I’d love to be in Hawaii right now, why not play along with Island Life’s Aloha Friday.

You know the drill. It’s all very simple. I ask a question. You answer it.

Here’s a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

What is the weirdest ornament on your Christmas tree?

Here’s mine.

I told you it was weird.

If you’re wondering why on earth I would have a Federal Bureau of Prisons ornament on my tree you should know that I am not kidding about the whole Inmates to playdates thing.

When I was in college learning how to be an inmate gopher counsel inmates, we toured several jails and prisons noting the differences in institutions, inmate behaviors and employees. Each tour proved to be educational in one way or another. On a tour of FCI (Federal Correctional Institution) Ashland, my shopping radar went off as I spotted a gift shop, proving that prison ain’t so bad after all.

Never one to pass up an opportunity to buy something, I purchased this Christmas ornament and a mug.

My MIL (mother in law) commented on my BOP (Bureau of Prisons) ornament the last time she was at the McResidence.

It triggered a memory that yes, indeed I did purchase that ornament in prison.

Quirks.

Yes, a truckload of them.

So, how about you?

What’s The Weirdest Ornament on your tree?

  • Good one! How about the ugly cabbage head that my bil & his kids gave my daughter? The only reason why it’s up is that for some unknown reason she loves it! Must be the love.

  • Jen :

I would have to say fishing bobbers! It sounds weird, but since my husband and I hunt and fish I thought it would be fun. I used fishing line to make the “ribbon” part.

  • No ornaments here since we celebrate Chanukah. Still I think your ornament is really unique and has history behind it.

  • My husband is the BIG Christmas guy… lol..
Since he’s deployed this year, I don;t have the energy to do all the decorating on my own… (we have 1 yr old twins).. so… No ornaments this year..
but, i must compliment you on yours… we love it.. :)

  • Abby :

Good question! This is a fun one. Well, we have an interesting assortment, but right now I think the weirdest are the ornaments that my son “makes”. They are not the cute little things that kids make at daycare, although I am sure those are coming soon. The G-man likes to pick up things he finds around the house or pieces of garbage and carefully hang them on the tree. It is his special contribution I guess!

  • My ornaments are all packed but I know I must have some strange ones !

They are probably ones that I have tried to make because I am not good at crafts.

  • One made out of a dead starfish (it stinks!)

  • Tara :

haha that is definitely an ornament that you wouldn’t expect to find on a tree lol.

I don’ t know if we have any weird ones.. my husband has a lot of his mom’s old ornaments.. some are different. There are these ancient AVON ornaments that weigh like 10 lbs i think haha and there is no way you can hang them from the tree or they will fall over.. but since they were in my husband’s family I have to make them work some how.

  • That’s a good one…you’re ornament that is…very unique…can’t say I have one of those :) Mine would have to be ceramic Santa plaque thing that my hubby’s distant aunt gave us for our first Christmas 3 years ago. You know she grabbed it out of her re-gift pile….Thanks Aunt Gertrude!!!
(why is it ACTUALLY on our tree? Well, this is only our 3rd Christmas married so we don’t have many ornaments yet….it’s a space-filler – haha!)

  • Teresa :

I love it Julie! One of the things that drew me to your blog was how much you remind me of one of my girlfriends–who works in corrections in Omaha, NE! She is the kindest, sweetest, softest person ever…unless she has her uniform. Then I won’t mess with her! You seem like that type of lady…anyhoo…so I love love love your “odd” ornament!

I’m sitting her looking at my tree and really can’t come up with anything strange or odd. The only different one would be a fish/bobber combo one with the phrase “56 kills” that I handmade to remember this awesome fishing trip my hubbie and his buddy went on at my grandparents’ pond! HA!

  • McDaddy :

The weirdest ornament on my tree is the Uggalee.

  • Okay, so I popped over, and you’re thinking I’m a true stalker now and should be in that prison you “shopped” at. Is that just a cover?? :) Great story and I love that your MIL gets a kick out of it! So cute! Our wierd ornament would have to be one that I purchased while stationed in Germany. I found it at a Christmas store, in July, in Rottenburg and it was the only one I could afford but by golly I was gonna get me an authentic ornament. Other than the little German guy dressed in tights I have no idear what in the world it is supposed to be. There are all kinds of chains and things hanging from his feet. Interesting. Oh, maybe it was a guy in a German prison! Eureka! That’s IT! :)
