American Idol – Top 8

April 8, 2009

in Time With My TiVo

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch American Idol live, so I can’t really classify this as live-blogging, but better late than never, right?

Have I mentioned this is my favorite night of television? Tonight the contestants are doing the song-from-your-birth-year-thing. This should be interesting. I wish just once they would let me pick the songs.

Let’s roll.

DANNY GOKEY – “Stand By Me” (1980) -  Dang. That boy can SANG. This cat has been my Number 1 pick since week 1, so I am a bit partial to his performances. He did not disappoint. I LOVE IT! – Randy says ‘he’s got some talent,’ Kara said ‘you killed it,’ Paula says he has set the bar really high and Simon says something about the beginning, middle and end and overall the performance was great. Just a note, Danny-Boy. Kris and Adam are right on your heels, so you will have to kick it up every week.

KRIS ALLEN – “All She Wants To Do Is Dance”  (1985) – Funky arrangement but I like it. I probably wouldn’t have picked this song for him, but I didn’t get to vote, so we’ll have to go with it. Kris happens to be my second favorite, so I would probably be pretty impressed with most anything he sings. It is definitely not my favorite performance, but I think he did a good job.  - Kara says he picked a good song but he sounded like he was singing something from jazz/funk class, Paula says he took a melodically, same-note song and made it his own, Simon says it was indulgent, boring, forgettable and…. that he came over as a guitarist who wanted to sing. He goes on to say it was a stupid, stupid song choice, Randy agrees.

LIL ROUNDS – “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” (1984) -  What is with that walk? And, is she about to bust out of that dress or is it just me?  Why am I not surprised that she picked a Tina Turner number? Great choice of song, but I think the performance was average until she got past the middle.  – Paula says she is a brilliant vocalist but that her rendition was karaokish, Simon says it was 3rd rate Tina Turner (down to the walk – hello!) and that she needs to become more original, Randy says she has mad talent but basically agrees with Paula and Simon, Kara wants her to make the leap from singer to artist.

ANOOP DESAI – “True Colors” – (1986) -  Noop Dog seems to be singing from the bottom of his heart. I’m not sure he’s moved me like that before tonight. The performance was low-key and controlled. Wow. I’m getting all sappy and whathaveyou. - Randy says it was controlled, Ditto for Kara, Paula said it was magical and that he showed his true colors, Simon says he is like a singing yo-yo and that tonight he was “up” and very good.

SCOTT MCINTYRE  – “The Search Is Over”  (1985) – He’s playing a guitar tonight and singing a great ballad. It totally reminds me of those awkward Jr. High dances where the girls would stand on one side of the gym and the boys would stand on the other and by the time one got up the courage to ask for a dance the song was over – but I digress. He sounds a bit flat in some parts but it may be just my lack of musicality. It is definitely not his best performance. - Kara says the song was over-ambitious for him, Paula is confused (go figure!) about his playing an electrical guitar as opposed to an acoustic and says he was screeching in some parts, Simon suggests he go back to the piano next week and says the song was horrible and the guitar playing wasn’t much better, Randy says it was just all okay.

ALLISON IRAHETA – “I Can’t Make You Love Me” (1992) – Okay, she was born the year I graduated from high school. I triple love this song. I have never been a fan of the fuschia hair, nor am I impressed with that mess she is wearing tonight. They need to get a fashion consultant in the wardrobe department. They should seriously contact Big Mama. Allsion did a really good job on this song. I feel like she was singing from the bottom of her [16 year old] heart too. – Paula really liked it, Simon says it was very good but that her personality isn’t coming through, Randy compares her to Kelly Clarkson and says that she can ‘sing her face off’ and calls her one of the best of the night, Kara says it is true talent to take a song with ‘adult content’ and make it believable the way she did.

MATT GIRAUD – “Part-Time Lover” (1985) -  I like the whole R&B / Funk thing.  The arrangement is awesome, and I love it that he put some scat in it. Ohboy can really SANG. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!! - Randy says that vocally it was one of the best of the night, Kara says it was incredible on every level, Paula says standing O, Simon says million times better than last weekwelldone.

ADAM LAMBERT – DANG. MY STUPID DVR CUT OFF!!! CAN YOU SENSE MY FRUSTRATION???? I have no idea what Adam sang and quite frankly, I am not a bit happy about it. The last two weeks Adam has BRUNG IT. Hopefully Boo Mama will tell me all about when I visit her place later this evening. SHOOT! TiVO, you should know that I am very disappointed with your behavior tonight. Puhlease, don’t ever do this to me again and we will be fine. THANKYOUVERYMUCH!

That’s exactly what I get for planning something else during the best night of television. SHOOT. SHOOT. SHOOT.

TOP PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGHT:  Matt*

GOING HOME: SCOTT* or LIL*

*Keep in mind I did not get to see or hear Adam.

I am off to visit my trusty friend, Google. Maybe his DVR got the performance.

**Updated to add Adam’s Performance**

Allison was born a month before my oldest. It’s so weird to know she’s so young and has a voice like that!
