Old Signs

in You Capture

Raise your hand if you’re ready for another fun week of You Capture…

I for one, had a difficult time with this weeks’ challenge. Because old signs? There’s not many old signs to speak of around these parts. I will be interested to see what others were able to capture.

If you’ve spent any amount of time around here at all, you know that I often talk about McDaddy’s heap, ahem! I mean JEEP. I lovingly refer to it as The Beast. For the rest of the week, I am not allowed to complain WHATSOEVER about the JEEP.

That’s because we left early yesterday morning to off-road in the JEEP for the SOLE PURPOSE OF CAPTURING A PICTURE OF AN OLD SIGN for this week’s You Capture post. McDaddy recalled seeing the sign during his last off-roading extravaganza. The sign was 15 miles up a holler in West Virginia. (I know the grammar fanatics are screaming!)  The last three miles of the trek were unpaved.

Thus, the name off-roading.

And, if you know me, you know that off-roading and I are not friends.

Because I am a big chicken.

One time the offroading caused me to act all crazy and have a panic attack. But, today was not bad because I had a goal in mind. A goal that included taking a picture of an old sign that McDaddy saw months ago.

Once we got to the sign, McDaddy suited up in a jacket and gloves because he had to traipse through some pretty high weeds to get close enough for the picture.

So, technically, this should be called McDaddy Captured.

Because I am a princess and I don’t traipse through high weeds for nothing.

Not even the blog.

So, without further ado or senseless commentary, here is the old sign I McDaddy captured.

The top of the old sign says Putney No 1 Mine. The sign lists the names of men who died in a coal-mine collapse back in 1951.

My great-grandpa worked at this mine for many years according to my granny. He probably knew some of these men.

We also saw this sign posted high on a tree.

And, because McDaddy made me promise to post a picture of the heap, ahem! I mean his beloved JEEP, I have to add this one…

McDaddy mentioned that before my papa passed away, the two of them drove miles and miles out this road. My papa told him stories about the ‘company store’ and ‘the old home-place’. As McDaddy and I drove farther into the woods, I thought about my papa and how many times he may have travelled this very same stretch of road.

As difficult as this week’s challenge was, I enjoyed it. My granny enjoyed telling me about the mines and the history of this stretch of road fifteen miles up the holler.

Next Week’s Challlenge:

Photograph something (or multiple things) that you have never photographed before…the world is your oyster.

Next week should be interesting.

Thanks Beth for this difficult, but fun challenge. Visit I Should Be Folding Laundry for more Old Signs pictures.

And speaking of signs…. sign your name over in the comment section of this post to enter my latest give-away!

Dont’cha love how I slid that right in there…

Enjoy your week, y’all!

what a beautiful sign, heartwarming to know that its still up and even though no one may know them personally, our hearts go out to their families who had to deal with the loss.

Nice hubby!
