Our school changed how they do this a couple of years ago. They have one day where they invite local crafters to bring in items that are $10 or less. There is one woman who knits hats and other things. She is kind enough to work with the teachers to determine which kids don’t have money due to family situations and she lets them shop without money.

Now I just need a list of ways to convince my kindergarten aged daughter that I will not open the gift she bought for me at school until Christmas. She asks me every day if I am going to open it. So far she’s kept what it is a secret, but I can tell she just wants to rip the paper off and show it to me.

I think this is very interesting. One of my BFF’s is our PTO president and is Jewish. I can’t imagine our school “allowing” such a Christmas practice, but it sounds fun for the kids!

Ha! These are very helpful hints!!
I worked at one when my son was in 1st grade and it is an absolute mess for any sane adult.
I did the bookfair the next year–WAY easier!!!!

Great post, however I realised while reading this there could be a different lesson to learn….

I remember the Santa shop. I wish I had those suggestions at the time.
