Hairs A Question
Today’s WFMW is a themed edition. That means it’s my turn to ask a question and your turn to share a tip that works for you. I’m hoping for lots of good advice!
For the better part of 22 years, I have been on the hunt for a really good hair spray.
I really don’t have a lot of requirements for hairspray except that it hold my hair.
And, since my hair dresser gave me a really good hair-do with awesome potential, I have also been on the search for a really good hair gel.
You may may or may not recall, I did a WFMW post a few months ago about Disorder Hair Gel. At the time, it seemed like and The Disorder were made for one another. It was fantastic for giving my hair the FLIP that it is supposed to have. When the stars are aligned and all is right with my world, my hair flips like this

On a not so good hair day (and believe me there are a bunch!), my hair looks like a hot mess. I don’t normally take pictures on hot mess hair days, so sadly, I don’t have pictures of the hot mess. You can just imagine one of those cute flips looking more like an ear on a beagle.
Unfortunately, the Disorder no longer does what it is supposed to. Or I am not using it correctly. Or I’m not crimping it the right way. Or, my hair is just used to the product and is choosing to ignore it. Or maybe my hair is shorter or longer than it was although I just got it cut a week ago. Sadly, when there are variables involved, anything can happen.
Kinda like my math skills.
Here’s a picture of my current arsenal.

And seriously, with an arsenal like this, my hair should pretty much style itself. These products range in price from $1.99 a bottle to $9.00. Surely, one of them should do the deed.
Yet, here I am making a plea to you, my loyal readers (all 8 of you!) to offer up some great advice.
I had really hoped the Short Sexy Hair stuff would do the trick, because really, how great does that sound? Unfortunately, it made my hair feel like plastic.
The Disorder worked wonderfully the first few months I used it, however, we seem to be at an impasse.
If my hair looked like this, I would be a happy girl who would not complain about her hair ever again. It is very cute!

So, with that in mind, I need your help with my hair.
Please tell me what types of hair products you use. I’m willing to try them all.
Me and my hair thank you!

Julie I use a root lifter from Kenra and it holds reeeeaaaaallly well when styling also.
Julie, try a hair putty, not a gel, its better for texturizing the pieces, like the picture above of Raquel Welch.
Loreal makes a good one. It doesn’t weigh the hair down like gel does.
I use Aussie Instant Freeze Aerosol Hairspray. It works on anything- try it!
Hey Jules!
I agree with Danielle; stay away from gels. Ms. Welch’s hair is very ‘piece-y’ and to get pieces like that, you should use a pomade (or putty or wax or paste…you get the idea). I have used Bed Head’s Manipulator and really like it, although many hair care companies produce these types of products. Good luck!
What a cute style! I admit that I’m going to be reading the answers, too. LOL!

That style would look great on you Julie! And the good news is that your hair isn’t far from it now. Wish I could offer some to-die-for product but I’m out. Sorry.

I can only offer what not to buy: Aveda hair spray is not the greatest for strong hold. Good luck!

Hahaha! It looks like you are going to end up with a ton of different answers. My stylist told me about 24 Body by Tressemme, it was $4.50 at Dollar General. I use the finishing spray on slightly wet hair & then once my hair is dry use Volumax freezing spray. I bought a huge bottle of it from Beautyco. These 2 products have helped me have hair that still looks good at 7pm as it did at 7am! I hope you are able to find something that works for you!
Volumax! It’s the only hairspray that will hold my ultra fine thin hair in place. The only place I’ve found it is at Sallys Beauty Supply. Hope this helps.
ok, I’ll tell you what works for ME – my daughter(22) is a hairdresser, so I only use salon products because she gets them for me at cost – but I will say I do have MUCH better luck with them!!
Right now – my FAV hairspray (I went back to aerosol hairspray a few years ago and love it!)
Nexxus Phyto Organics VaporGel Firm Hold Micro-Gel Mist- LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff!!
I dont currenly have a style where I need to hold pieces “up” – but when I did need that kind of hold I REALLY liked TIGI Catwalk Curls Rock Curl Amplifier
Right now to make my ends look a little “piecey” I LOVE Fekkai Glossing Cream
Hope this helps some – you can google any of them to find them

My Mom has short spikey hair and she uses Bed Head Manipulator. I love Bed Head products in general but I know that Manipulator is a great one. Hope that helps.
Hey Julie- I’m an expert flipper. I have been flipping your style off and on for about ten years. And I am a product flunkie- if I use anything, it’s any old mousse or spray gel. I think how I flip it is more important. For my, curling iron flips fall flat fast and frequently. I prefer using a round brush and the hair dryer. The key is the blast of cold air before unrolling the hair from the brush. I won’t buy a dryer without a cold button- I swear it locks the curl. I also swear by aerosol hair sprays. It’s pretty old school, but I prefer Sebastian’s Shaper Plus.
There is a such thing as…..GOOD HAIR!
I…do not have it! But I know those who do!
My hair has a hormonal attitude and does what it wants most days. Very sad!
I would love to look like Raquel myself! Cute cut!
Good luck!

Sorry, no advice from your M-I-L. That would be WAY out of my comfort zone. Looks like you have some great leads, though. It’ll be fun to see what works for you!
I also do hair for a living and you really do need a good paste I like to tell my clients to put it in damp and then dry- that way it doesn’t get too heavy and it will get that piecey look. Manipulator is a great old fav (although I hate the smell) Aquage has a Transforming Paste (love the smell) all prof lines make something similar. Hairspray Favs Sebastian Shaper or REShaper also from Sebastain. Good Luck!
Just jumped over from We are that Family blog. I don’t usually post comments b/c I don’t think I can add anything, but here, I can help! LOL I have tried them ALL…I mean really, everything for my hair, really expensive and really cheap. The best (a bit pricey up front, but a little goes a LONG way–I mean the container lasts years) for the ‘kicky’ look is Redken’s Rewind styling paste. For volume, I like Aveda’s volumizing tonic and the BEST hairspray ever is Aveda’s Witch Hazel spray.
I have recently started using Paul Mitchell Spray Wax. It says to use it when your hair is dry, but my stylist recommended using it wet. I use a volumizing spray first, then the wax… it works much like a paste, but gives your hair a lot of hold and extra lift, so you don’t need as much hair spray.

I do not use hair spray believe it or not but my mother swears by aquanet
I heard your plea a while back for a great hairspray. I wish I had one, but I’m not a very good go-to girl for hair care products. I’m a little afraid and intimidated of hair care products and thankfully I have pretty good hair so I don’t really require them. Good luck with your quest!

I don’t really do the hair styling thing. Mostly because I’m to lazy. But if I did there are some styles in a couple j-mag’s that I’ve downloaded that I want. I’m just no good at the stuff though. I’d have to get my mom to show me how to mess with my hair.

I had more luck getting my hair to stay put when I used pomade (I think it was got2be branded). I’ve given up now though since 4 out of 5 times I’ll be stranded in the rain somewhere anyways *L*
